Cooking with Lisa sensei

On Monday Year 8 and Year 9/10 Japanese elective classes welcomed Japanese Teacher Assistant, Lisa sensei, back to the College to provide guidance for cooking some Japanese food.

Year 8 students made a popular dish called 鈥淥yakodon鈥 鈥 a delicious topping of flavoured chicken and egg on a bed of rice. The overall review was that it was very tasty, so hopefully some families may benefit from the students鈥 new Japanese recipe repertoire!

Year 9/10 began by making their own homemade udon noodles. They then divided into groups where some students made tonkatsu (crumbed pork cutlets) to create 鈥淜atsu-udon鈥 and the other prepared vegetables to make 鈥淵aki-udon鈥.

After trying both dishes, we had some division as to which was the favoured recipe 鈥 but both were declared to have passed the stringent taste tests!

Mains were followed up with dessert later in the week 鈥 鈥淲afu Parfait鈥 (Japanese-style parfait). The rice-based shiratama balls were a challenge texture-wise for some, both most people gained an appreciation for anko (red bean paste), which is a staple ingredient in many Japanese sweets.

This was particularly good timing to help our Year 10 students assimilate to eating Japanese food, since we are down to single figures until the trip departs and they have 10 days of Japanese gourmet eating!

Lisa sensei, arigatou gozaimashita! We really appreciated your excellent cooking tips and encouragement.
