Our 7-10 assembly this week was the final assembly of the year for secondary students. Our 2019 College Captains Maddison Cockerill and Lachlan Rowlands acknowledged the leadership of our Class of 2018 and wished their Year 10 friends well in their exams and their graduation ceremonies and celebrations next week.
At the 7-10 Assembly we were able to recognise a number of achievements by our students. It is my hope that all students will be encouraged to continue their commitment in their studies and keep challenging themselves to move to higher levels of achievement in everything they do at school.
7-10 ICAS and Maths Students
Congratulations to some of our outstanding academic students who received ICAS, Australian Mathematics Competition, and Australian Mathematics Olympiad certificates at the assembly: Blake Appleby, Harry Breslin, Oscar Breslin, Max Brideson, Ilar Flynn, James Lane-MacDonald, Cassandra McLoughlin, Noah Oliver, Jethro Plunkett and Joshua Willson.
These students have achieved either a Distinction, which places them in the top 10% of participants or a High Distinction, which places them in the top 1% of participants. We wish these students well as they continue to excel in their mathematical endeavours.
7-10 Tournament of Minds
We also took the opportunity at the assembly to commend our 7-10 students who participated in the 2018 Tournament of the Minds. The tournament is an international competition aimed at problem solving and teamwork skills using open-ended challenges.
Well done to Thomas Atkinson, Talysha Blight, Billie Green, Cassandra McLoughlin, Promise Mudzingwa, Briana Shaji and Jackie Van Lierop. Our novice team, chose the Arts challenge, requiring them to create a 10 minute ‘Musical for the Ages’ which incorporated the theme of freedom using a 1940s art piece, 1980s fashion, a 1920s dance as well as music from at least four different decades.
Japanese Speech Competition
Our 7-10 Japanese language students have continued to perform exceptionally well in competition with other language students state-wide.
Congratulations to the following students who were awarded prizes in the 2018 State Japanese Speech Competition and recognised at our assembly: Dione Oloroso (Year 8 Honourable Mention), Ella Fitzpatrick (Year 9 First Place), Sarah Fitzpatrick (Year 9 Third Place) Blake Appleby (Year 10 Honourable Mention) and Georgina Richardson (Year 10 Third Place).
Semester 2 Diamond Awards
It gave us great pleasure to especially recognise our students (pictured left in House groups) who received the full 5/5 from all of their subject teachers for each aspect of our College Expectations: Attitude towards Learning, Organisation in the Learning Environment, Contribution to the Learning Environment and Respect for the Learning Environment.
We extend our congratulations to these excellent students who, regardless of their academic capacities or achievements give their absolute best in every subject. They are indeed ‘Dominic Diamonds.’
Next week there will be an assembly for our K-6 students on Wednesday, and then on Thursday 29 November, we hold our prestigious Annual Awards ceremony for our Year 6-10 students. I look forward to commending further our students who have excelled in 2018.
